Background

As part of our research, it stood out that “an event, like sporting, concert or festival” was the number one reason why Maritime residents visited the Halifax region in what is considered the “shoulder” or “low” season. This season refers to November through February when the weather typically discourages people from getting outside and enjoying the region. We need to change that and celebrate the stark beauty of our winter wonderland, cheer for our favourite team or band, and stay active.

The practice of establishing a signature event has been tried and true for other destinations. Just consider the impact of events like October’s Celtic Colours to Cape Breton, September’s Toronto Film Festival, February’s Winterlude in Ottawa or February’s Winter Carnival in Quebec. After all, what would Calgary be without the Stampede, which dates back to 1912 and attracts more than a million visitors each year? The entire Halifax region could benefit from a high-calibre, unique Bluenoser event outside the typical tourist season. The establishment of the Evergreen Festival, a four-week long, outdoor winter market, is the first of these two signature events. With continued support, the Evergreen Festival will grow to successfully draw to visitors, as well as an anticipated community holiday event.
