The economic impact of the tourism industry has never been more evident than it is today. Every destination has felt the impacts of a global pandemic that has prevented travellers from exploring.
The Halifax region typically welcomes 5.3 million overnight stays every year. These visitors spend an estimated $1.3 billion annually in local shops, restaurants, stores, attractions, and accommodations.
There are 4,000 businesses throughout Halifax who serve residents as well as travellers. And they provide approximately 34,000 jobs. Those businesses are also an important source of tax revenue in our community which helps to fund municipal services and infrastructure—everything from roads and transit services to parks and recreation.
All communities in Halifax will feel the impact from lost tourism revenue in 2020. The good news is Halifax has tremendous potential for economic growth through tourism. As a destination, we provide exceptional hospitality and service, and Discover Halifax is working hard alongside industry partners to revive Halifax’s visitor economy.
Integrated Tourism Master Plan (ITMP)
The Integrated Tourism Master Plan (ITMP) provides a vision for tourism in Halifax. Leading destinations are founded in a clear picture of where they are going and what needs to happen to achieve this, and this plan is how we will all get there, together.
Ultimately, this plan will help drive and prioritize the efforts and investments that will lead to sustainable economic growth from the region’s tourism economy. And that will do one important thing: it will enrich the lives of our citizens.
