New recognition program responds to demand for sustainable business events
As sustainability becomes an increasingly important consideration for event planners and rights holders, we have launched a Sustainable Events Program to recognize meetings and conventions that create positive environmental, economic, and community impact.
The program responds to growing demand from organizations looking to reduce the environmental footprint of their events while creating meaningful benefits for the destinations they visit. It provides a practical framework to recognize sustainable initiatives already incorporated into events and encourage continued progress through achievable actions.
Rather than a certification program, it recognizes organizations that are making sustainability a priority while hosting events in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).
Eligible meetings and conventions can apply to be recognized in one or more of three categories:
- Climate Action – reducing environmental impact through initiatives such as waste reduction, resource conservation, and lower-carbon event practices.
- Local Sourcing – supporting businesses, suppliers, and communities by choosing local products and services whenever possible.
- Community Building – creating positive social impact through initiatives focused on inclusion, accessibility, community partnerships, or legacy projects.
Events demonstrating leadership across all three areas could receive recognition as a Premier Sustainable Event.
Successful applicants receive digital recognition assets, including program badges, social media graphics, presentation materials, and a post-event reporting template to help communicate their sustainability efforts. Recognized events will also be featured through our Business Events channels.
The program is open to national and international meetings and conventions that bring at least 50 per cent of attendees from outside the region, have confirmed dates, and can demonstrate sustainable initiatives incorporated into the event.
The Sustainable Events Program is part of a broader effort to support responsible tourism and help event planners create lasting environmental, economic, and community benefits. Alongside the program, planners have access to resources including a Sustainable Business Events Guide and opportunities for local impact that make it easier to incorporate sustainability.
