Tourism industry leader, Dean Leland, was elected Board Chair following three years of leadership from Doug Townsend
Discover Halifax has a new Board of Directors Chair as local resort owner and restaurateur, Dean Leland, takes the reins from The Canteen on Portland’s Doug Townsend, who has served as Chair for the past three years, and will remain as a member of the Board of Directors.
Leland joined the Board in 2024 and is the owner and operator of Oceanstone Resort and Nordic Spa and Watermark Restaurant in Indian Harbour. With a career rooted in hospitality and tourism, he brings extensive industry experience and a strong commitment to advancing the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) as a leading destination.
“As tourism continues to evolve and visitor expectations continue to grow, Discover Halifax is exceptionally well-positioned to lead that growth,” says Leland. “We have a strong volunteer board, a talented team of professionals, and committed partners across the sector who are passionate about building something strong together. I believe our best days are ahead of us.”
Leland assumes the role following a successful three-years by outgoing Chair, Doug Townsend, whose leadership helped guide the organization through a period of significant growth and transformation for the tourism industry.
“I want to congratulate Dean on his election as Chair of the Board of Directors. Dean brings deep experience in tourism and hospitality and a strong understanding of the role this sector plays in our region’s economy and identity,” says Mayor Andy Fillmore.
“As Halifax continues to grow, tourism will remain an important part of how we support local businesses, attract major events, strengthen our downtowns, and continue building Halifax’s reputation as a leading destination city. I also want to thank Doug for his leadership and service during a period of strong growth for Halifax’s visitor economy and positioning Discover Halifax well for the opportunities ahead.”
During Townsend's tenure, Discover Halifax secured a historic service agreement between HRM and the Hotel Association of Nova Scotia, expanded its focus on destination development and festivals and events, and continued to support record tourism growth across the region.
“Dean is taking on this role at an exciting time for both Discover Halifax and our industry," says Ross Jefferson, President and CEO of Discover Halifax. “With strong momentum across the sector, I look forward to working alongside Dean, Doug, Mayor Fillmore, and rest of our Board of Directors as we continue building on our success.”
Alongside Leland, the officers of the 2026/2027 Discover Halifax Board of Directors are:
- Treasurer, Paul Brigley – VP Finance and CFO, Halifax International Airport Authority
- Secretary, Ifeanyi Emesih - Founder and CEO, My East Coast Experience Media INC
