Halifax climbs rankings as an international conference destination, passing major cities

Halifax is gaining global recognition as a destination of choice for international conferences, a clear sign of the region’s growing influence in fields like clean energy, ocean technology, and life sciences.

In 2024, Discover Halifax secured 33 international conferences for future years, the highest number on record and more than double any previous year. These events are expected to generate over $18 million in economic impact for the region, while also helping drive innovation, collaboration, and long-term investment.

One of the marquee business events coming to Halifax in 2027 is the World Hydrogen Energy Conference, which will draw leaders, academia and potential investors in clean energy from around the world, and put a spotlight on the Nova Scotia’s leadership and development in green energy.

“Much of the success can be traced to a deliberate strategy to target and attract conferences aligned with Nova Scotia’s core strengths, and the approach is delivering results,” says Discover Halifax President and CEO, Ross Jefferson.

Jefferson also points to support from Destination Canada’s International Conference Attraction Fund as a driver that helps Halifax compete on the global stage. To date, the region has secured $4.4 million in funding for 26 major events, making it possible to not only bid, but win against huge destinations like Singapore and San Diego.

That momentum is earning the municipality international attention. In 2024, the International Congress and Convention Association ranked Halifax 4th among Canadian cities, surpassing Ottawa, Calgary, Quebec City, and Banff as a top-tier destination for international association meetings. Previously, Halifax ranked 8th.

Jefferson notes that this success wouldn’t be possible without the strong connections between event partners in the region. When an international conference comes here, there is a network of collaborators who are passionate about sharing what Halifax has to offer ready to help.

“When international conferences come to Halifax, they leave a lasting legacy,” says Jefferson. “From new research collaborations and foreign investment to community partnerships and talent attraction, these events are more than milestones - they’re markers of momentum for Halifax.”
