 Explore & Define

This is where the purpose of the project becomes clear, and the lead organization has approved it to go forward. A project moves to the next stage when the foundation is in place, there’s a well-defined idea that’s ready for planning.

Overview

Forming a governance council will integrate music sector growth with tourism, placemaking, and economic strategies, enhancing Halifax’s music identity. Music is a key asset, but growth has been fragmented. Coordinated governance will strengthen reputation, support inclusive growth, and establish Halifax as Atlantic Canada’s music capital.

Wavemakers: Music Futures Conference & Showcase

March 2026

Held March 19–20, 2026, the Wavemakers: Music Futures Conference & Showcase marked an important step forward in advancing the ITMP initiative, Establishing Governance for the Music and Tourism Economy.

Hosted by Music Nova Scotia (and supported by partners including Discover Halifax, Events East, and private sector operators), the Music Futures conference was delivered as part of the Wavemakers Legacy following the 2024 JUNO Awards.

Music Futures brought together leaders from the music industry, tourism, live events, business, and the public sector to explore how music can drive economic growth and tourism in Halifax, and across Nova Scotia. Through a mix of conference sessions and intentional networking, the event created space for real dialogue, relationship-building, and alignment among many of the stakeholders.

The program also included a workshop which brought together senior leaders from Discover Halifax, Tourism Nova Scotia, Events East, and the Downtown Halifax Business Commission. The session focused on where their strategies intersect with the music industry, what’s worked in the past, and how to best position music as a driver of success.

While these organizations often operate in parallel, this workshop created a practical, collaborative space to start further conversation.
