 Explore & Define

This is where the purpose of the project becomes clear, and the lead organization has approved it to go forward. A project moves to the next stage when the foundation is in place, there’s a well-defined idea that’s ready for planning.

Overview

Africville, the former African Nova Scotian community displaced in the 1960s, is Canada’s first UNESCO-designated Place of History and Memory linked to Enslavement and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This international recognition honours the community’s profound cultural legacy, its resilience in the face of systemic racism, and the enduring contributions of its former residents and their descendants.

Africville remains a site of deep cultural significance to Halifax, and further enhancement and development of the area would amplify its tourism appeal, enrich cultural storytelling, and strengthen African Nova Scotian heritage tourism as an integral part of our community identity.

Continuing to shape the future of Africville

February 2026

Africville is making progress on several fronts, developing strategic partnerships, and continuing to enhance tourism offerings.

Marina infrastructure

Installation of marina docks with berths for up to 31 small to medium sized vessels is expected to be completed in May 2026. This represents a major step forward in improving marine access and positioning Africville as a culturally significant waterfront destination. Discussions are ongoing to identify a partner to lease or operate the marina, supporting long-term operational sustainability.

Youth sailing opportunities

Africville continues to work in partnership with Sail Nova Scotia and We Can Foil, with additional collaboration emerging through the Broader Reach Program. These partnerships are focused on youth engagement, skills development, and access to on-water experiences. A significant partnership announcement is anticipated in the near term, which will further strengthen program delivery and visibility.

The partnership with Sail Nova Scotia is expanding through discussions with the Nova Scotia Department of Education to establish a framework that would allow students to receive school credit for participation in the sailing school. In addition, Sail Grand Prix has committed to providing opportunities for six youth participants to support event operations at Canada Sail Grand Prix in Halifax this June, creating direct pathways to exposure within a global sport tourism event.

UNESCO recognition and signage installation

Africville continues engagement with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCUNESCO), with recent discussions focused on interpretive signage to recognize Africville’s cultural significance. Signage installation is targeted for fall 2026, with CCUNESCO expressing interest in collaborating on a public-facing event to mark the installation.
